School is just now starting back up for most of the country. It’s exciting to start a new year. You get new clothes, a new backpack, new school supplies, plus more! While you’re out buying new school supplies and freshening up your kids’ wardrobes, why not freshen up their oral health supplies as well?

First, it might be time for a new toothbrush. The American Dental Association recommends replacing toothbrushes every three to four months, or more frequently if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do as good a job cleaning teeth. And with all of the cartoon characters and superheroes available on toothbrushes, picking one out can be just as fun as choosing a new lunchbox or notebook!

Don’t forget the dental floss. It is important to floss daily. Most people tend to forget to floss. However, flossing is important but for most kids, it’s not “fun”. Floss does come in different flavors. Taking your kids to the store to pick out a flavor could encourage them to floss. Or, they don’t have to use the spool of floss, there are dental picks and other disposable tools that are made for flossing. Plus, they come in all kinds of fun shapes and colors.

Are your kids into sports? Well, with any contact sport, it is important to protect your mouth. If your kids play football, hockey, soccer, boxing, karate, or any other contact sport, a mouthguard should be used. Sports-related dental injuries account for more than six hundred thousand emergency room visits each year. If your child wears braces, a mouthguard may be particularly important. Custom-made mouthguards are the right kind to use because they are made from a mold of their mouth, so it will fit perfectly. Luckily enough, we make them in-house. Go ahead and schedule an appointment with us today to get one made for your child.

Don’t forget about getting a check-up and cleaning before going back to school. A fresh, clean mouth will go great with their fresh new clothes. Plus, it is important to be cavity-free. Getting an appointment before school starts needs to be on your checklist.
