Traditionally, a dentist performs a dental exam following your teeth’s routine, deep cleaning. Cleaning and polishing your teeth before the dentist examines them allows all food to be washed away. This leaves it more accessible for the dentist to spot any abnormalities that might be occurring.
What happens during a Dental Exam?
We encourage our patients to take advantage of our latest x-ray technology to capture up close and detailed images of their teeth and their teeth roots. These x-rays allow the dentist to spot even the tiniest amount of decay.
Why do I need a Dentist?
Dentists are professionals who have gone to years of school to identify issues and restore teeth after reported problems. The only way to diagnose a dental issue is through a dental professional.
General dentistry is a dental specialty that encompasses a wide variety of restorative, cosmetic, and preventative dental treatments that can all be used to improve your smile in different ways.
Preventative Treatment
Dental exams are one of the significant ways to prevent dental problems from occurring or spreading. Dentists are trained to locate decay, evaluate its progress, and suggest a specified treatment to improve the tooth. By staying up to date on regular cleanings and dental exams, patients have a better chance of catching decay early on therefore preventing the need for extensive restorative work.

History And Important Information

Your child’s first exam will be a comprehensive exam to evaluate your child’s overall oral health. This exam involves a thorough review of their health history. At this appointment, your child will have an age-appropriate cleaning. The doctor will also diagnose any oral health issues that may require treatment.
If patients have utilized x-rays, the dentist will examine the x-rays at the beginning of each exam. Regardless of whether there are x-rays or not, the dentist will continue to examine your teeth by looking at one tooth at a time. While reviewing each tooth, the dentist will be looking for blemishes in the enamel that could indicate that decay is present.

Dental X-Ray

The American Dental Association states that radiation exposure associated with dentistry represents a minor contribution to the total exposure from all sources, including natural and artificial. This means that dental x-rays are safe. All x-rays in our office are digital, which is 70% less radiation than conventional film x-rays. X-rays will be needed at most exams for our dentist to evaluate your child’s oral health (Bone & tooth structure under the gums).

We don’t believe in any surprises before or after any exams. We will always keep you informed of how treatment appointments will need to be scheduled. We will always inform you of what your financial obligations will be so you can make educated decisions. We will always remind you of your appointments and any pre-appointment preparation.
