What Are Porcelain Crowns?
A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that we cannot restore with fillings or other types of restorations.
Although there are several crowns, tooth-colored crowns are the most popular because they resemble your natural teeth. They are highly durable and will last many years, but they may eventually need replacing like most dental restorations. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color of your teeth, giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.
We use porcelain to make crowns to give each patient a beautiful, natural-appearing restoration that won’t draw any unwanted attention. Having a pearly white sheen, porcelain looks almost exactly like our natural tooth enamel.
WHAT DOES GETTING A PORCELAIN CROWN INVOLVE
A crown procedure usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate molds (or impressions) that we will use to create your custom crown. A mold will also be used to create a temporary crown which will stay on your teeth for approximately two weeks until a dental laboratory fabricates your new crown. While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the natural tooth surface to fit the crown properly. Once we finish, we will place your temporary crown with temporary cement, and we will check your bite to ensure you are biting properly. After leaving our office, your molds and details about your customized dental crown will be gathered and sent to a dental laboratory. Lab technicians will create the crown using porcelain and ensure all measurements are correct on the finalized piece. We will remove your temporary crown at your second appointment, clean the tooth, and carefully place your new crown to ensure accurate spacing and bite. Once we have checked that the crown fits properly and feels natural, we will use solid dental cement to bond the crown onto the prepared natural tooth surface. You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental visits to check your new crown. Although porcelain crowns are made from artificial material, it is still essential for patients to clean the tooth through brushing and flossing.
